Working On Your Business Or In Your Business

There is a fundamentally different approach with different outcomes to these 2 styles.

WORKING IN YOUR BUSINESS

This describes those owners who are in there every day listing and selling properties - and probably doing what they really enjoy. However, if you are doing this because you are (in effect) 'the business' then it may follow that the business will not expand much beyond the owner and maybe 1 or 2 others because of the pressure put on the owner to keep the business going. It can also become a very demanding situation, with lots of hours and not much time off to take extended holidays, etc. Profitability will be limited due to the size of the office being limited in its capacity to expand.

WORKING ON YOUR BUSINESS

In this situation the owner moves into a managerial role and focusses upon devloping and expanding the business and all the asociated activities and concurrent work that is required to achieve these aims. The chances are that the owner does very little listing and selling on a day to day basis - but may still do some small scale listing or selling in order to keep in touch with the market and also for selected clients.

Whatever style of business you choose, there are positives and negatives in both approaches. The profitability of the business can be substantially different, as can be the risks involved.
